What’s everyone's take on these? Is there anything that makes this better or worse than a Caravan, or is it exactly the same in every way aside from the badge? I like the looks, and the are plenty around me for cheapish. It could make a good wife car.

My understanding is that the suspension was tuned a little to feel more European, but otherwise it’s all FCA, for better or for worse. My last girlfriend’s Caravan was an electrical nightmare, and for that reason alone I’d avoid this, or any other FCA product for that matter , like the plague.

From memory, the only thing it missed out on over the Caravan was the Stow and Go seating. So mechanically, it’s just another Caravan.

It’s not FCA- Fiat didn't buy Chrysler until 2014. Routan production ended in 2013. I've yet to have a bad experience with a Chrysler product, and I've owned a few.

Stow and go would be a big plus, but not a deal breaker by any means.

Yeah, that doesn't bode well. I still want to check one out, though.

Yeah, no harm in test driving one.

If you like grenading transmissions, you're going to love the Routan!

Take your T and R and swap them round and I give you a Touran.

Kinja'd!!!

Sorry, that was no help. We don’t get the Routan here.

You’ve had better luck than us. Our ‘96 Caravan had electrical issues that in one case resulted in the van shutting off at speed in the left lane of the Jersey turnpike, Our ‘99 grenaded the transmission (I’ll post a photo in the morning), and our ‘03 was the worst of all with it first dying in Alabama on a road trip (still don’t really know what broke, but the repair was around $3k), then three years later the engine violently ate itself, and a few years after that the replacement engine lost a head gasket.

We now have a 2012 Town and Country

The automatic in the actual VW made  Eurovan V6 that predated the Routan had that predilection too...

Id go caravan over vw because there are a million more of them and what little they changed will inevitably be something you end up replacing. Bet little things like headlight assemblies and just accidental stuff is twice as pricey. Just beware these things turn themself off while driving. I’ve been in 3 that have done it. Research it I’m not alone it’s happened many times to us in our 09 and my work vans 20 11 and 20 13 all of them were well cared for and fully up to date on recalls. Just sold our 09 because o f a history of dangerous situations and because I’m a nice guy and didn’t trust it with my family I had to disclose that in the Craigslist listing. You know 99% of people would not. Long story short I just bought Honda. I’m done with both Daimler Chrysler and FCA they are no longer welcome in my garage.

Ps when you do research on the shut off issue beware lots of people point to the ignition but all of mine were replaced under warranty because o f another issue they were having so the water is a little muddy there also the issue was on two totally different motors for us.

Don’t believe the cynics...compared to the caravan or T&C, these are far better looking both inside and out. Seats, especially, are a lot nicer since they don’t have to stow (ie, thicker). Suspension is supposedly better, but I couldn’t tell.

But for a “VW” they are a little loud and harsh and don’t cover up their Chrysler roots very well. Powerful, but loud and very  torque-steery. And you have the minor hassles of an orphan car...parts, repairs, etc

We had friends who bought a Routan. They seems to really like it.

These were people who would see something at Kroger and go look for it at Whole Foods to buy it.

That analogy. I like it.

These were introduced before the Grand Caravan/Town & Country were tweaked and facelifted. I’d take my chances on a newer Chrysler van with the 3.6 Pentastar if possible.

I prefer the look of the VW, honestly, and the later Tourans also received the 3.6.
